SVMHA Team Allocation Process
At the beginning of every season, the SVMHA board and the community centre
representatives meet to determine how many teams will be needed at each age and
level. We usually meet the second last Thursday of September when the
registration numbers have been compiled and the first evaluations are in
progress.
The first task is to calculate the number of teams required at each age
group. This is based on the total number of players registered subtracting the
number expected to make AAA and AA and the minimum and maximum roster sizes set
by the WMHA. For house league teams, we aim for roster sizes as close to 12 as
possible. For 8A1, we generally enter two teams with a minimum roster (12) but
the final decision every season is based on the number of players that try out.
For 9 to 12, the minimum roster size is 12 and the maximum is 15. For 13 and
over, the minimum roster size is 15 and the maximum roster size is 19. For most female teams, the minimum roster is 10 and the maximum is 19. (see
WMHA rules http://www.wmha.mb.ca/08wmharules.pdf - page 108 Program Chart)
Once we have the number of teams for each age, we then determine how many
are required at each level based on WMHA rules. The tables for this are on page
32, 34, and 35 of this season's rulebook (see link above). The chart for mixed

For example, if the 10 year old mixed has 7 teams, there should be 3 A1, 2 A2, and 2 A3 teams. The SVMHA may apply to vary from the above charts if the past performance of the age group would indicate that we would be better off with a different number of teams at a level but this is not something done on a regular basis.
Once we have the number of teams calculated, we are down to deciding which community centres host which teams. We go through the list of teams, one age group at a time with the clubs choosing which teams they would like to host. The overriding principle in allocating the teams is to make sure the clubs host teams in rough proportion to the number of players at their club and the amout of ice time that a club has available. After that, every club has their own way of choosing priorities for the teams that they want to host and if you are interested in how your community centre chooses which teams to host, the club representatives would be able to discuss that with you.
